CNN tries to twist this story and make it about the screaming child.
This story is about a young white girl who thinks she has the right to tell another adult how to deal with their child, and who thinks she can tell another adult to ‘go to hell’ and not get a beat down.
PS – the oppressor is the White woman who thinks she can talk down to another mom. The beat down is instant justice.
Mock Spanish (fl. 1953- ) is that thing where Anglo Americans use Spanish, much of it deformed, for added humour: “No problemo”, “Hasta la vista, baby”, “el cheapo”, “cojones”, “grassy ass”, “Comprende?”, etc. Because of Hollywood, it is no longer just them.
Most Anglos seem to see it as light-hearted, broad-minded and worldly (“See, I know some Spanish!”). It is used by the high and the low, the left and the right. They do not mean it to be racist, therefore they think it cannot possibly be racist.
Many Latinos, but not all, see it as disrespectful, if not racist.
The disrespect is not imagined – it is built right into Mock Spanish:

On Ferguson and the killing of people of color by white police officers:
I am surprised, with all that’s been talked about with this issue for decades, at the language we use to discuss this. I would offer one simple adjustment to our thinking, which would potentially get us to finally address the issue at its source. We have a way of talking about this as in the passive tense rather than the active tense. I heard students at one of my recent visits to a college talk about how “I am in danger because of the color of my skin.” This is not true, you are in danger because of the mindset of the culture and mentality and actions of other people. The burden is not on you. It is on them. You are not being killed (passive tense), people are killing you (active tense). You can’t stop the passive tense, you can only stop the active tense. Stop the killing—then people will stop being killed.

My take differs from Ayo’s take
On “black•ish” (the TV Show):
I had reservations about this show and I was not overly impressed with the first episode. The writers did an okay job, good enough to give them more air time though. I didn’t feel the problem was a twisting of identities. The show is about mixed identity and that’s what makes it interesting.
On movies about painful parts of Back History:
I totally feel Ayo on her point here. I can relate because I can’t stand watching videos of people getting hurt. I also don’t like horror movies. And because I’m aware of people’s sensitive feelings and that painful news can trigger remembering other painful events, I try to limit painful news and painful history on my personal Facebook page. However, because it’s important to know the truth of current events and history I do post about painful news and history on some of my social media. I segment what I post. I put oppressive stuff on my Oppression Monitor social sites and more positive or neutral posts on my Community Village social sites.
On “Dear White People” and Movies like it:
I thought I was not going to love this movie based on some of the previews I saw. However, the acting, directing, cinematography, lighting, hair, wardrobe and story as a whole were all excellent! And it’s a good movie to open discussions on fraternity segregation compared to housing segregation. Fraternities like to be grouped by common interests, whereas segregated housing off campus is highly problematic. This movie could also prompt great blog posts about interracial dating, interracial marriage, identity framing, society response to interracial dating / marriage and family response to interracial dating / marriage.
On “How to Get Away with Murder” and the “make-up and wig moment”:
I completely agree with Ayo. This scene was genius.
No one really knows how many people are killed by police because the feds refuse to compile and reveal that information. If the Malcolm X Grassroots Movements is right, a black person is killed extra judicially every 28 hours. That a complete disregard for Black life.
Even in Latino communities lots of value is placed on whiteness over blackness. We need to talk about anti-blackness within Latino communities, so as part of a #DigitalAltar for Dia De Los Muertos we want to celebrate Black life and Mike Brown.

At least 86 school districts in New York are requiring documents that some immigrant children do not have and discouraging enrollment as a result, a New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) survey found Thursday. Some schools are even reportedly turning kids away. An earlier review found that 139 districts were out of compliance with the law in their 2010 survey, but four years on, the majority of those schools still require information or proof of residency that could have a “chilling effect” on immigrants who are too afraid to register because of their immigration status, a move that could be in violation of federal law.
“Today’s survey demonstrates that the State Education Department (SED) has failed to enforce its own guidelines regarding immigrant student enrollment, despite being aware of the problems for years,” the NYCLU press release read in part.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that public schools cannot deny undocumented immigrants a public education on account of their legal status.
