The Model Minority is a Lever of White Supremacy

 

“According to the myth we’re also less prone to criminality, more family-oriented, harder working, less egocentric, more cooperative, and less mouthy, making us ideal employees. That is, of course, as long as we don’t aspire to management. Lei Lai, an assistant professor at Tulane University, found that Asian Americans have the lowest probability of promotion to managerial positions among all non-whites, and in part for being stereotyped as having some of the same characteristics – being quiet and unassertive, among others – that lead many to call us model minorities, begging the question, is the model for the racial minorities America wants just submissive, put up or shut up robots?

So let’s cut through some of the fairy dust here. Asian Americans do have higher median family incomes than all others by race. However, that’s because Asian American families tend to include more incomes. Our per capita incomes still lag behind that of whites. Asian Americans also tend to be clustered in coastal cities where median incomes are higher, skewing that statistic even further. Even the supposed higher than average educational attainment level of Asians doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny. When it comes to the percentage of adults without high school diplomas, the Hmong, Chinese, Laotians, Vietnamese, and Cambodians in the U.S. all exceed the national average of 19.6%, with the Hmong on the extreme end of disadvantage at 59.6%

The reality is that very little unites Asians other than the fact that non-Asians have decided we are a race, and an often hated one, and have treated us as such, whether we like it or not.

The myth provides a smokescreen for one of the most fundamental contradictions of U.S. democracy – our ideal of liberty and equal rights, and our history of slavery and enduring legacy of white supremacy – and allows our policy makers to avoid the systemic reforms that are necessary to address that contradiction.”

Student Sues California University For $5 Million, Alleges Horrifying Racial Abuse

When there can be this level of bullying at San Jose State University, a bastion of progressive thought, that should be a bellwether for everyone nationwide,” Douglas told Reuters.

 

“I want there to be a conversation started by the filing of this claim… there are issues of racial intolerance, of bullying and of harassment running rampant in universities and colleges across this nation,” he said.

University spokeswoman Patricia Harris declined to comment on the claim, which named as defendants the university, its president Mohammad Qayoumi, a school housing adviser and others.

Authorities said four white roommates taunted and harassed the student, who was 17 at the time, by displaying Nazi imagery and a Confederate flag in their dormitory and attempting to hang a U-shape bicycle lock around his neck.

 

The roommates, also students, referred to him as “three-fifths” or “fraction,” the claim said, in an apparent slur relating to the fact African American slaves counted as only three fifths of a person under an 18th century agreement between U.S. states to determine state population sizes.

 

The roommates barricaded him in his room, and threatened him with a golf club when they tried to locate a missing pet goldfish, the claim said. The harassment lasted from at least September 23 to October 31, 2013, it said.

Some people have a skill for finding ways to justify their insanity.

Here are six things that people like Michael Dunn do to get themselves into trouble and to justify their racist behavior.

        1. Demean other people’s culture
          Michael Dunn’s first response to hearing hip-hop music at the gas station was to say “I hate that rap crap.”


        2. Use their privilege to hassle those with different cultures or lifestyles
          Michael Dunn could have parked away from the music. Instead he parked next to the music and used his able bodied, white privilege to confront the teens, asking them to turn down the volume.


        3. Blame the victim
          Michael Dunn, after shooting three bullets into Jordan Davis and 6 more bullets into the Durango then tells his fiance that he was the victim.


        4. Don’t learn about the failings and oppressiveness of White culture. Always feel superior.
          If Michael Dunn had ever taken an African American history class, he might know that White people have been pushing Black people around since the first enslaved Africans were human trafficked to the Americas in 1526.


        5. See phantom weapons. Cell phones and wallets as guns.
          If Michael Dunn would have studied implicit bias, or systemic racism – he may have known that he should second guess his own fears and biases and not jump to conclusions.


        6. Acting as if in a war zone
          If Michael Dunn was level headed, he would only show his gun to scare away what he perceived as a threat. Apparently he thought he was in a war zone. He shot first and asked questions later.

The Destruction of Black Wall Street

 

“Greenwood, Oklahoma, a suburb of Tulsa, was the type of community that African Americans are still, today, attempting to reclaim and rebuild.  It was modern, majestic, sophisticated and unapologetically…”

 

Linda Christenson writes the following:

 

“The term “race riot” does not adequately describe the events of May 31—June 1, 1921 in Greenwood… In fact, the term itself implies that both blacks and whites might be equally to blame for the lawlessness and violence. The historical record documents a sustained and murderous assault on black lives and property. This assault was met by a brave but unsuccessful armed defense of their community by some black World War I veterans and others.

 

During the night and day of the riot, deputized whites killed more than 300 African Americans. They looted and burned to the ground 40 square blocks of 1,265 African American homes, including hospitals, schools, and churches, and destroyed 150 businesses. White deputies and members of the National Guard arrested and detained 6,000 black Tulsans who were released only upon being vouched for by a white employer or other white citizen. Nine thousand African Americans were left homeless and lived in tents well into the winter of 1921.
