Cop Involved In Killing of #FreddieGray Had Been Suspended Twice

Lt. Brian Rice, who was the first to make eye contact with Freddie Gray, has been suspended twice from the Baltimore police force for personal reasons, including mental health and an protective order.

In 2012, Lt. Brian Rice was hospitalized for a mental health concern. It happens. People have circumstantial and other types of depression and mental health issues. The main thing is that they seek and receive help. Another main thing too, is that they re-evaluate their profession and if necessary, go into another line of work.

Audit Details Racial Discrepancy in OKC Schools Suspensions | Latina Lista

By Nate Robson
Oklahoma Watch

With two months still left in the school year, administrators at Taft Middle School in Oklahoma City have already suspended more than half of their black students.

At Capitol Hill High School, the average length of a suspension is nearly 12 days, or more than two weeks of missed class time. Capitol Hill officials also told several parents that re-enrolling their children was a “waste of time” because of the re-enrollment date.

Northwest Classen High School and Douglas Mid-High School each referred 20 percent of their students to alternative education programs meant for students at risk of failing or getting kicked out of school.

These and other findings are part of an internal audit, obtained by Oklahoma Watch Monday, that was conducted by Oklahoma City Public Schools. The audit was partly in response to a U.S. Department of Education civil rights investigation focusing on complaints of race-based bias in how students are disciplined.

School officials also said Oklahoma City Superintendent Rob Neu, who is in his first year on the job, requested the audit after arriving in Oklahoma because of the improvements it led to in his old school in Washington state.

The audit, which Oklahoma Watch obtained through an Open Records Act request, corroborates what a release of federal data revealed last year: According to the three-year-old data, Oklahoma City’s black students are two to three times more likely to be suspended than their white classmates in middle or high school.

Disarm the police.

The police need to stop being judge, jury, and executioner.

When Baltimore police broke Freddie Gray’s neck, the president said nothing.

When the police, who had arrested Freddie Gray for running, would not arrest anyone for killing him, the president said nothing.

When the police would not say who killed him or how, the president said nothing.

When the people of Baltimore protested, day after day, the president said nothing.

When some protesters broke car windows and shop windows, the president said nothing.

But when people in West Baltimore rioted, robbing and burning a CVS pharmacy, owned by the 12th largest company in the country, a White-owned business, the president spoke out.

He called what the rioters did “violence”, but not what the police did.

He called the rioters “thugs”, but not the police.

As if the rioters had killed someone, not the police.

As if it was the CVS pharmacy that could never be brought back, not Freddie Gray.

The president said the “violence” was “counterproductive”. He, the Drone Master himself. He who helps Israel bomb women and children.

In a capitalist country, what is the best way to get the attention of those in charge?

PS – President Obama called those who started the fires in Baltimore ‘thugs’. Shame on him. No human is a thug. Civil rights activists know we the disenfranchised and disrespected are being pushed into a corner and are crying out. The president has not called the police ‘thugs’ for killing #FreddieGray

Thug is the new n-word.

The word ‘thug’ is dehumanizing, just like the n-word.

“Them Hispanics work hard as hell,” Jesse Durr tells Vice correspondent Thomas Morton during a segment of Friday’s new episode titled “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Durr was one of the few people in Alabama who took on one of the thousands of agricultural jobs that undocumented immigrants left vacant after 2011, when the state’s governor signed the Beason-Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, or HB56, into law.

The law intended to make life so difficult for undocumented immigrants in Alabama that they would have to leave the state or the country. Morton started reporting in January 2014 and spent the next six months checking in on the small independent farmers featured in the latest episode of Vice.
