As the detective in the old LA Dragnet show use to say – “just the facts”. Between Jan. 1, 2000 and August 31, 2014, the report found, law enforcement officers in Los Angeles County used lethal force resulting in the deaths of at least 589 people. That’s almost one death a week, for nearly 14 years.

A San Francisco civil jury today ruled in favor of a white, former transit officer who fatally shot an unarmed, black man in an infamous killing captured on cellphone cameras.
The federal jury awarded no damages to the father of Oscar Grant III, killed by a single shot to the back from BART Officer Johannes Mehserle early on Jan. 1, 2009 in Oakland.

Strange how Oscar Grant’s father didn’t win a settlement but Grant’s mother and daughter and Grant’s friends did win a settlement.
“My heart is so heavy,” Tritobia Ford said in an interview Tuesday evening. “My son was a good kid. He didn’t deserve to die the way he did.”
Her son was lying on the ground and complying with the officers’ commands when he was shot three times, Tritobia Ford said.
In the aftermath of the shooting, she said, police refused to inform her of where Ezell Ford was hospitalized.”

A young black man was killed this weekend. He was shot multiple times by police while walking to his grandmother’s house. He was left to die in the street, his body surrounded for hours by armed sentries while his family and community watched horrified from the sidelines. Michael Brown was unarmed. Today would have been his first day of college.
