Trial Begins For Man Who Shot Unarmed Black Teenager On His Porch

DETROIT — As a prosecutor showed a jury photos of Renisha McBride, her father rushed out of the court room. The photos of the 19-year-old — first smiling, and then lying lifeless on a porch — were shown in quick succession at the beginning of one of the most highly publicized and racially charged trials of the year. Opening statements began Wednesday in the trial of Theodore Wafer, the 55-year-old Dearborn Heights, Michigan, man charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of McBride. Wafer is accused of shooting her with a shotgun through his locked screen door around 4:40 a.m. on Nov. 2. His attorney seeks to show that he was in fear for his life and shot her in self-defense, while the prosecutor has maintained Wafer had no reason to be fearful, and killed an unarmed, impaired woman. “His actions that night were unnecessary, unjustified and unreasonable,” Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Danielle Hagaman-Clark said. Defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter said what happened to McBride was “horrible” but that the jury should set aside their feelings and focus on the law.   Click through for more.     Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

The Male Shooter Epidemic

James Lorello asks us to consider creating authentic relationships with young men to curb violence.   In recent weeks the U.S. has seen a number of shootings around the country committed by men.  This includes shootings at military bases, schools and other public arenas. In the past, these types of incidents have raised questions around two topics; gun control and mental illness. While these topics contribute to the issue, a third should be added to the list. Why are most of these campus shooters men? What within their identity says that this violent tactic is the only way to heal from their past?   Recent work has debunked the claim that these shooters are simply “loners” and that social separation influences them to commit acts of violence. Katherine Newman, co-author of Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings says that these shooters “experience rejection all the time, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to join groups. They just fail, all the time.” Instead of being people who are lone wolves, they are individuals trying to fit in to a larger peer group. Today’s construction of masculine identity does not leave much room for those who do not fit in.  Whether too slow in gym class, or too smart, not good enough with the ladies, or too much acne. Young male groups are built upon tearing down those that are less than. This continual posturing forces men to establish themselves as the alpha male and therefore a “real man”. Must WATCH: Victim’s father angry and distraught: ‘Why wasn’t something done’

Richard Martinez, father of one of the Santa Barbara shooting victims, speaks to CNN’s Kyung Lah.

Community Village‘s insight:

He’s right. The majority of us don’t have the power to change laws. The most that the majority of us have the time and power to do is vote, protest, and communicate to those who will listen.

However, those who we elect have the time, power and influence – and yet the majority of those politicians do not enact strong enough laws to protect the lives of the families who elected them.

Do you think the ‘cat is out of the bag’ with guns? Do you think that so many people have guns in the U.S. that there is no turning back?

Are the ‘chickens coming home to roost’ as Malcolm X said?
