Report: Police Fatally Shot More Than 2 People A Day So Far in 2015. Here’s The Breakdown

Statistics about fatal police shootings are notoriously hard to come by, so the Washington Post started counting this year. The result is an analysis of 385 fatal police shootings — more than 2 per day — around the nation during the first 5 months of 2015. Reports the

Post:

About half the victims were white, half minority. But the demographics shifted sharply among the unarmed victims, two-thirds of whom were black or Hispanic. Overall, blacks were killed at three times the rate of whites or other minorities when adjusting by the population of the census tracts where the shootings occurred.

And if you’re wondering if any of those fatal shootings produced charges against an officer, here’s what the newspaper found: only 3 resulted in an officer being charged with a crime — less than 1 percent of the total number of cases nationwide.

No Charges for Atlanta Police Officers Who Shot Detained Mother Dead in the Back of Police Vehicle

By Caleb Gee

Head over to Color Lines to read the mind-boggling account of Alexia Christian’s murder by two Atlanta police officers in the back of a police vehicle after she allegedly attempted to shoot them. How she managed to get ahold of a gun from one of the officers seated in the front seat while she was handcuffed and restrained in the back is anyone’s guess. This follows an array of supposed back-seat “suicides” in the back of police vehicles within the past 3 years in which detainees are alleged to have shot themselves using somehow undetected weapons while their hands are cuffed tightly behind their backs. In one such case, that of Victor White III of New Iberia, Louisiana, an autopsy proved he died from a gunshot to the chest. Yet somehow authorities continue insisting he committed suicide and the maintain that the cops who undoubtedly shot him are “innocent” in the eyes of the law.

The MOVE bombing

The MOVE bombing
(May 13th 1985) was where Philadelphia police in the US bombed the house of MOVE, a Black back-to-nature movement. Eleven people were killed. Five were children, ages 5 to 13. The police called the children “combatants”. The fire department stood right there and did nothing for an hour as the fire spread, destroying 61 houses in the mostly Black, West Philly neighbourhood.

Cops Have Killed Every 8 Hours in 2015, Sending At Least Three People to Early Graves Per Day

As of February 15, only a month and a half into 2015, there has been at least 136 individuals killed by police in the United States since the first of the year.

The frighteningly high number averages out to three killed per day, or someone killed every eight hours.  While there is no government-run database, Killed By Police has taken it upon themselves to keep track, and are doing a fantastic job thus far.

Just to put things into perspective, let’s take a look at the rates at which police in other countries kill their citizens.

Let’s look at our immediate neighbors to the north, Canada. The total number of citizens killed by law enforcement officers in the year 2014, was 14; that is 78 times less people than the US.

If we look at the United Kingdom, 1 person was killed by police in 2014 and 0 in 2013. English police reportedly fired guns a total of three times in all of 2013, with zero reported fatalities.
From 2010 through 2014, there were four fatal police shootings in England, which has a population of about 52 million. By contrast, Albuquerque, N.M., with a population 1 percent the size of England’s, had 26 fatal police shootings in that same time period.

China, whose population is 4 and 1/2 times the size of the United States, recorded 12 killings by law enforcement officers in 2014.
Let that sink in. Law enforcement in the US killed 92 times more people than a country with nearly 1.4 billion people.
It doesn’t stop there.

From 2013-2014, German police killed absolutely no one.
