Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

RCMP report on Aboriginal women puts numbers to our national shame: Tim Harper

We are quick to work to protect women’s rights abroad, but when it comes to murdered Aboriginals at home, we are quick to look the other way.

Tim Harper – TheStar.com – May 18

I Deserve Justice: Native Women From Alaska – 5 Part Series

Background:

In 1978, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in Oliphant v. Suquamish Indan Tribe, declaring that American Indian Nations could no longer exercise jurisdiction over non-native offenders who commit crimes on tribal lands. Although the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (“VAWA”) in March 2013 restores a portion of the jurisdiction that Oliphant stripped away to American Indian Nations, VAWAspecifically excludes 228 federally recognized tribes in Alaska. Consequently, as a result of Section 910 of VAWA 2013, Alaska Native women remain the only group of Native women whose tribal governments cannot protect them. Virginia Cop Sentenced To A Mere 3 Years For Killing Unarmed Woman

She has a name; Patricia Cook. She was killed in Culpeper, Virginia on February 9, 2012.

Patricia was 54 years old. No one knows why she was in the parking lot of Epiphany Catholic School, but while there, she was approached by Culpeper Police Officer Daniel Harmon-Wright.  Officer Harmon-Wright said he received a call of a suspicious vehicle.

Wright fired two shots into Patricia’s vehicle. The first two rounds, fired at point-blank range, tore into Cook’s face and arm. Patricia managed to drive away, but Harmon-Wright did not stop shooting. He shot Patricia 5 times; a round entered her brain, and the another round severed her spine and veered into her heart.
