Georgia Immigrant Detainees ‘Riot’ Over Maggot-Filled Food – COLORLINES

More than two dozen detainees at a notorious immigration detention center in Georgia staged a hunger strike and protest last week over inedible food, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reported. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called the protest at Stewart Detention Center a “riot” that required that detainees be “segregated for disciplinary purposes,” according to the AJC. The ACLU and Georgia Detention Watch filed a complaint raising alarm about a hunger strike that detainees began on or around June 12, during which hundreds of detainees threw their food away. Detainees have complained that their food is often filled with maggots, or that the same water used to boil eggs is reused to brew coffee. Detainees who work in food preparation have also complained of a roach infestation in the facility’s kitchen. Detainees were frequently served rotten food.   Click through to read more.   Source: colorlines.com   Serving rotten food is another way to dehumanize. The U.S. needs to be better than this.

The Unbelievable Brutality Unleashed on Kids in For-Profit Prisons

Michael McIntosh couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had come to visit his son at the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility near Jackson, Miss., only to be turned away. His son wasn’t there.

“I said, ‘Well, where is he?’ They said, ‘We don’t know.’”

Thus began a search for his son Mike that lasted more than six weeks. Desperate for answers, he repeatedly called the prison and the Mississippi Department of Corrections. “I was running out of options. Nobody would give me an answer, from the warden all the way to the commissioner.”

Finally, a nurse at the prison gave him a clue: Check the area hospitals.

After more frantic phone calls, he found Mike in a hospital in Greenwood, hours away. He was shocked at what he saw. His son could barely move, let alone sit up. He couldn’t see or talk or use his right arm. “He’s got this baseball-size knot on the back of his head,” McIntosh said. “He’s got cuts all over him, bruises. He has stab wounds. The teeth in the front are broken. He’s scared out of his mind. He doesn’t have a clue where he’s at – or why.”

Mentally ill Florida prisoner scalded to death.

“An inmate in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, Darren Rainey, was locked inside a shower and burned to death while other inmates heard him desperately crying out for help. Inspectors have ruled that the death was an accident, but some are questioning whether or not this is just a cover-up.

Apparently this isn’t the first time recently that an inmate has died under highly unusual circumstances in a Miami-Dade County prison. ”

Apparently the mentally ill in the U.S. are not given help, but instead incarcerated, tortured and killed.
