Civil Rights Act of 1964

 

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination in the US based on race, colour, religion, sex or national origin. It also outlawed segregation, keeping races separate, at schools, public places and most businesses. It, and the Voting Rights Act a year later, overthrew Jim Crow.


School busing and affirmative action grew out of it as policies designed to meet its demands


It was one of the main civil rights reforms of the 1960s:

  • 1964: Civil Rights Act
  • 1965: Voting Rights Act
  • 1965: Immigration and Nationality Act
  • 1967: Loving v Virginia – overturned laws against mixed-race marriage.
  • 1968: Fair Housing Act

Study Reveals Police Are 10 Times More Likely To Shoot African Americans

 

It’s official: African American residents are 10 times more likely than Caucasians to be shot by police. At least that’s what one study found for residents of Chicago.

In an analysis of recent data from the City of Chicago Independent Police Review Authority, “In black and Latino, lower-income neighborhoods you will see police officers who are instructed to stop and frisk and aggressively search every day,” civil rights attorney Craig Futterman told the Chicago Reporter, which first crunched the data.

U.S. xenophobia is out of control.

 

The city of Murrieta has an animal shelter near by – but children in need – the community has no tolerance for children.

 

And it’s usually the offspring of immigrants themselves who want to block access to those in need.

Fruitvale Station

 

“Fruitvale Station” (2013) is an American film about the last day of Oscar Grant’s life. On January 1st 2009, Grant, an unarmed Black man, was shot in the back by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police at Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California. Octavia Spencer plays his mother. Ryan Coogler writes and directs, his first film. It won an NAACP Image Award, an award at Cannes, but no Oscar.

Autopsy Report Alleges Clayton Lockett Execution Doomed By Staff Error

Comments by an attorney from the Death Penalty Clinic at the U.C. Berkeley School of Law lay out the details of the team’s handling of the execution, which led to the heart attack that eventually killed him:

“The improper placement of the IV used in Mr. Lockett’s execution is just one factor that caused his prolonged and painful death,” said Megan McCracken, an attorney with the Death Penalty Clinic at U.C. Berkeley School of Law. “The three-drug protocol that was used exacerbated the pain and suffering that Mr. Lockett faced by needlessly paralyzing him and subjecting him to the pain of potassium chloride. Moreover, the state had no plan for contingencies in the event that the execution did not go as planned, as clearly happened here.”

There are also concerns of how properly trained personnel were regarding the execution. The Department of Corrections timeline revealed that the IV was applied by a phlebotomist and later confirmed by the state. When a local news outlet questioned the matter, the state reversed their statement and said that an unnamed EMT was the person to apply the femoral vein IV. According to the state’s execution protocol, a physician should have set the IV, and not a phlebotomist.

Secrecy Lifted from Border Agency’s Use of Force

 

“The federal agency that guards the nation’s ports and borders released a report Friday criticizing its use of force by its officers and also made public an updated rulebook on when and how to use force.


The release of the more than 1-year old critical review done by the Police Executive Research Forum and commissioned by the agency comes after escalating pressure on Customs and Border Protection over dozens of use of force incidents that have not led to consequences or punishment for officers and agents involved in them.


R. Gil Kerlikowske, commissioner for Customs and Border Protection, CBP, which oversees the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs, said the revised policy handbook on use of force incorporates most recommendations from the PERF review and the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees CBP.”
