Ferguson II

On Monday November 24th 2014 in the US, the grand jury of St Louis County said it would not charge Darren Wilson with a crime. Wilson is the White police officer who gunned down Michael Brown in broad daylight and let his body lie there in the street for four hours. Brown was 18 and unarmed. This was in Ferguson, Missouri, a mostly Black township in suburban St Louis. Nights of violence between police and protesters followed and 108 days of protest.

Indianapolis newspaper alters, then deletes racist Thanksgiving cartoon following complaints

Responding to criticism that a cartoon depicting undocumented immigrants coming through a window to share Thanksgiving dinner with a white family was racist, an Indiana newspaper edited out the stereotyped housebreaker’s mustache, ostensibly to make the cartoon seem less racist.

This is what #xenophobia, #racism and white supremacist patriarchy look like – the cartoonist and the white family in the cartoon.

The dad is holding the turkey as if he did all the cooking.

And Instead of inviting Latino guests or Native Americans to their dinner, they the cartoonist depicts that Latinos are breaking into their house – because, you know, all Latinos are criminals.

The doctrine of white supremacy does this. It always flips the script to make white people appear as the norm and the law abiding while making people of color appear as invaders and law breakers.  And Euro-Americans do all this while living on Amerindian land.

Brooklyn Man Fatally Shot by Police Was Unarmed, Bratton Says

The two officers had taken the elevator to check out the roof and, shortly before midnight, they entered the eighth-floor stairwell to walk back down. The lights were not working, making it nearly impossible to see, so both officers took out their flashlights.

Officer Liang also drew his weapon, the police said.

At the same moment the officers started down the stairwell, Mr. Gurley and his girlfriend entered through a door on the seventh floor, fourteen concrete steps below the officers.

It was unclear why, but Officer Liang accidentally discharged his weapon and fired a single shot that struck Mr. Gurley in the chest.

The force of the blast sent Mr. Gurley tumbling down two flights of stairs, where his girlfriend knelt by his side. The officers, who briefly backed out of the stairwell, found her by Mr. Gurley’s side trying to save his life.

Mr. Gurley was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Following standard protocol, Officer Liang was relieved of his gun and his badge.

A is for Activist – Kindle edition by Innosanto Nagara

A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. The alliteration, rhyming, and vibrant illustrations make the book exciting for children, while the issues it brings up resonate with their parents’ values of community, equality, and justice. This engaging little book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children to action while teaching them a love for books.

What If The Killing In Ferguson Was Reversed

Modified a little from original post:

The Ferguson shooting in reverse:
A young white kid is walking down the street. A black policeman approaches him and tells him to get the F**K out of the street. The cop pulls off, then backs up, almost hitting the white kid. A confrontation occurs, shots are fired with several white neighbors witnessing it. The black cop exits the vehicle and begins to fire on the unarmed white kid who is running away. The white kid turns around and puts his hands in the air. The black police officer continues to shot at the white kid, shooting him in the eye and top of the head as he is slumping down from the previous shots.

Critical Ethnic Studies MA Degree – DePaul University

DePaul University’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to offer the first graduate program in a new and exciting field that utilizes Chicago as a living classroom.

The Master of Arts in Critical Ethnic Studies prepares students for advanced analysis of race and ethnicity in an urban and global context. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to the studies of systematic marginalization of racialized minorities. It also looks at how racialized groups respond to and counter these forces through art, culture, political organization and other forms of social citizenship.
We emphasize social justice and transformation while focusing on U.S. ethno-racial populations through an intersectional, transnational, and urban framework. Students apply critical theories to complex social and cultural issues. The program consists of a combination of core courses and electives and a final project or internship.

Income inequality impairs the American dream of upward mobility – debate [VIDEO]

The elephant in the room that I did not hear in the debate is that the question should have not used the word inequality. Instead they should have used the word inequity.

“Income inequity impairs the American dream of upward mobility.”

How New York Schools Are Deterring Immigrants From Enrollment

At least 86 school districts in New York are requiring documents that some immigrant children do not have and discouraging enrollment as a result, a New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) survey found Thursday. Some schools are even reportedly turning kids away. An earlier review found that 139 districts were out of compliance with the law in their 2010 survey, but four years on, the majority of those schools still require information or proof of residency that could have a “chilling effect” on immigrants who are too afraid to register because of their immigration status, a move that could be in violation of federal law.

“Today’s survey demonstrates that the State Education Department (SED) has failed to enforce its own guidelines regarding immigrant student enrollment, despite being aware of the problems for years,” the NYCLU press release read in part.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that public schools cannot deny undocumented immigrants a public education on account of their legal status.
