Last night I first heard the news that an 11-year-old San Tan Valley, Arizona boy whose father was a police officer committed suicide. Samuel Epps, 11, became upset after an argument with his father, went into his parent’s bedroom, locked the door, took his father’s unsecured 9mm handgun and fatally shot himself in the head. Every indication pointed to suicide and not an accidental shooting.
Initial reports stated that there was no known mental health conditions the boy suffered with nor was there ever any indication he had thoughts of hurting himself or thoughts of suicide. Sadly in Arizona there is no law that requires a gun be locked up and kept out of the reach of children. There are laws on neglect though which this case could fall under.

The fight over whether shoppers should be allowed to tote guns openly in American businesses is about to spill into the aisles of Kroger, the nation’s largest supermarket chain. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a national gun control organization backed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, will kick off a campaign on Monday that seeks to pressure the grocery giant to ban the open carry of firearms in all of its nearly 2,500 stores. The moms’ group decided to take action in response to recent demonstrations by open carry activists in Kroger stores in Ohio and Texas, and after conducting research that identified more than a dozen shootings on Kroger property since 2012, said Erika Soto Lamb, a spokeswoman. “Kroger employees shouldn’t have to determine whether the person holding a gun in the frozen aisle is someone dangerous or someone making a political statement,” Lamb said. If he was Black or Brown and brought an assault weapon out in public what would happen?
Remember what happened ten seconds after seeing 13 year old Andy Lopez carrying a toy gun that looked like an assault rifle?
Andy was shot 7 times within 26 seconds. The eight bullet missed.
We have all seen the headlines, “Fla. Mom gets 20 years for warning shot”. We have all heard some of the stories trying to tie this long sentence to race. What most don’t know is the history behind what happened.
I’m not talking about what happened to Ms. Alexander but the history behind the sentencing. What most fail to realize is that it wasn’t the crime she was found guilty of, it wasn’t her race and it had nothing to do with a warning shot. It has everything to do with a law.

If you’re wondering why the U.S. has a mas-incarceration issue, here is part of the reason.
#MandatoryMinimums
It’s strange that we employee experienced judges and then don’t allow them to have discretion on how to implement penalties.
