Black Spring

The Black Spring
(2014- ) is the name some give to the current protests in the US by Blacks and others, especially those against police brutality.

It gets its name from how it is oddly like the Arab Spring
 of 2011 in

Egypt and elsewhere:

  1. Lack of human rights.
  2. High rates of poverty and unemployment that the government is doing little about.
  3. Use of Twitter and street protests.
  4. The government answering legitimate demands with a police crackdown. Go back to Step #1.

There is a difference
, though: in the US the protesters in Egypt were seen asheroes, while protesters in the US are ignored or called “thugs”, even by a Black president.

I date the beginning of the Black Spring to Ferguson in 2014.
There were protests before that, like for Rekia Boyd and Kimani Gray, and huge ones for Trayvon Martin.

San Francisco D.A. George Gascón Expands Racial Bias Inquiry Into SF Police Department

First came disclosures of racist and homophobic text messages exchanged by officers of San Francisco’s Police Department. That was followed by the discovery that sheriff’s deputies had been gambling on forced fighting matches between inmates at a city jail.

Then on Thursday, the San Francisco district attorneyGeorge Gascón announced that he was expanding the investigation of the city’s police and sheriff’s departments to examine whether those agencies have a deep-seated culture of systemic bias that has led to unlawful arrests or prosecutions.

There is systemic abuse at all levels.

Audit Details Racial Discrepancy in OKC Schools Suspensions | Latina Lista

By Nate Robson
Oklahoma Watch

With two months still left in the school year, administrators at Taft Middle School in Oklahoma City have already suspended more than half of their black students.

At Capitol Hill High School, the average length of a suspension is nearly 12 days, or more than two weeks of missed class time. Capitol Hill officials also told several parents that re-enrolling their children was a “waste of time” because of the re-enrollment date.

Northwest Classen High School and Douglas Mid-High School each referred 20 percent of their students to alternative education programs meant for students at risk of failing or getting kicked out of school.

These and other findings are part of an internal audit, obtained by Oklahoma Watch Monday, that was conducted by Oklahoma City Public Schools. The audit was partly in response to a U.S. Department of Education civil rights investigation focusing on complaints of race-based bias in how students are disciplined.

School officials also said Oklahoma City Superintendent Rob Neu, who is in his first year on the job, requested the audit after arriving in Oklahoma because of the improvements it led to in his old school in Washington state.

The audit, which Oklahoma Watch obtained through an Open Records Act request, corroborates what a release of federal data revealed last year: According to the three-year-old data, Oklahoma City’s black students are two to three times more likely to be suspended than their white classmates in middle or high school.

AT&T Fires President Aaron Slator for Sending Racist Texts and Images, Faces $100M Employee Discrimination Suit

Telecom giant AT&T has fired an executive who was sued this week for allegedly using his work cell phone to keep and send racially offensive images.  Aaron Slator was fired as AT&T’s President of Content and Advertising Sales after employee Knoyme King, 50, accused him and other executives at AT&T of subjecting her to discriminatory behavior.

“There is no place for demeaning behavior within AT&T, and we regret the action was not taken earlier,” the company said in a statement confirming Slator’s dismissal.

The images at issue were found in Slator’s possession when he asked an assistant to transfer data from an old phone to a new one, the lawsuit said.
