When Force is Hardest to Justify, Victims of Police Violence Are Most Likely to be Black

 

A Pew study found that 63% of white and 20% of black people think that Michael Brown’s death at the hands of Darren Wilson is not about race.

Those people are wrong.

African Americans are, in fact, far more likely to be killed by police. Among young men, blacks are 21 times more likely to die at the hands of police than their white counterparts.

Obama announces funding for 50,000 police body cameras

In an announcement today, the White House has pledged $263 million in new federal funding for police training and body cameras, set aside by executive order. The money includes $75 million allocated specifically for the purchase 50,000 cameras for law enforcement officers across the country.

Eyes from around the nation and world have been watching events in Ferguson, Missouri, for some time now.
The bifurcated nature of the responses is particularly problematic when it specifically comes to the inability of many people colorized (or racialized) as White, regardless of their otherwise everyday political leanings. Our nation, especially its institutions, have serious issues with all things related to racism/colorism, privilege, acknowledging history (and remember I define history as everything and anything from less than a microsecond ago), and seeing how this affects the future.
