Ex-family detention social worker speaks at congressional forum

BY FRANCO ORDOÑEZ

A former social worker told members of Congress on Tuesday that she witnessed rampant abuse and neglect while working at a family detention center in Karnes City, Texas.

Olivia López was among a panel of witnesses that included former detained mothers and mental health experts who shared upsetting accounts of life and work inside the detention centers, the stress of being locked up with their children and the potential long-term psychological impacts.

The U.S. knows that Japanese family internment (incarceration) was wrong, now the U.S. is incarcerating Latino families.

Kimmel chokes up on air over Cecil the lion

Jimmy Kimmel weighed in on the Cecil the lion issue during his monologue on Tuesday night and he didn’t hold back.

Sourced through Scoop.it from: www.cnn.com

Did Kimmel choke up or cry when 9 Black people where murdered at church?

Kimmel insinuated that the most hated person in America is a rapist rather than a mass-murder.

Kimmel is worked up over one Lion being killed, while the U.S. houses millions of humans and animals in abusive conditions and kills humans (police kill more than on person every 28 hours) and factory farms kill millions of animals every year.

I’d like him to explain why he was crying. Did he realize he hasn’t fought for the cause of #BlackLivesMatter and #LatinosAreHuman ?

Full Unedited Body Cam Video Of #SamDubose Murder by Officer Ray Tensing

This is the full raw body cam footage of the murder of Sam Dubose by University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tinsing. This includes Tinsing speaking to other officers after the shooting.

Dubose was originally stopped for not having a front license plate. Officer Tinsing claimed that Dubose had run him over and was dragging him with his car, which is clearly not the case in the video. Tinsing was indicted by a grand jury on murder charges today (July 29).

The full unedited video. Horrific.

America, the oppression has never stopped. Never stopped.

Henry Davis Wins Appeal Against Ferguson Cops Who Beat Him; Can Now Sue for Excessive Force

The Ferguson cops charged Henry Davis with destruction of property because he bled on their uniforms when they beat him.

Then, as if fearing it might be outdone in ridiculousness, a federal district court ruled that Davis could not sue the cops for violating his Fourth Amendment rights because they had not injured him badly enough as he lay handcuffed on the jailhouse floor, a working man arrested on a traffic warrant in a case of mistaken identity.

“As unreasonable as it may sound, a reasonable officer could have believed that beating a subdued and compliant Mr. Davis while causing only a concussion, scalp lacerations and bruising with almost no permanent damage did not violate the Constitution,” the district court ruled in tossing out the case.

Davis appealed and his attorney James Schottel responded to absurdity with legal reasoning. He argued that the decisive factor was not the seriousness of Davis’s injuries but the nature of the officers’ actions.

The district court had ruled that the officers enjoyed “official immunity” because they “acted within their discretion and caused only de minimis [slight] injuries.”

Schottel contended that official immunity “does not apply to discretionary acts done in bad faith or with malice.”

The appeals court could not have been clearer in its response on Tuesday.

“We agree.”

Sam Dubose

By Abagond

Excerpts from @getgln

Sam Dubose (1971-2015) was an unarmed Black American man who was shot dead by police in Cincinnati, Ohio after a Routine Traffic Stop. At 6.30pm on July 19th 2015

The video shows Tensing repeatedly asking Dubose for his driver’s licence. Dubose is sitting in his car looking for it.

Then Tensing, telling Dubose to take off his safety belt, tries to open the car door! Dubose tries to keep the car door closed and starts his engine.

Tensing reaches into the car and tells him, “Stop!” – and then shoots him in the face (fuzzed out in the video).

In the US in 2015 so far, police have killed over 550 people.

This is only the fourth time anyone has been charged with a crime.

Mormons Consider Ending Relationship With Boy Scouts

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed disappointment following the Boy Scouts of America’s acceptance of gay scout leaders – but not all religious groups share same sentiment.

The Mormon church has double standards. That church is not righteous. It does not lead. It follows, and it doesn’t even follow the righteous mainstream.

  • First Mormons didn’t want Black people in the priesthood.
  • Then Mormons fought against the right for LGBTQ people to marry.
  • Then Mormons didn’t want LGBTQIA as members.
  • Now Mormons are against gay people as leaders in the Boy Scouts.
  • Mormons have never allowed women in the priesthood.
Mormons practiced racism, and now homophobia and sexism.

When the oppressed turn into oppressors: Parenting & internalised racism

Article by Guilaine Kinouani

Excerpts selected by Glenn Robinson

The privilege of being lighter skinned

I am a lighter skinned Black woman. I am light enough to benefit from shadism but dark enough to still be accepted as Black. A uniquely privileged position. Throughout my upbringing I have received messages in my environment that this made me more desirable, more worthy, and/or more significant than my darker skinned counterparts. These messages were both covert and overt and articulated in the home and outside the home, at school, in the media etc… Pretty much everywhere.  There is no doubt that I was, at times, spoken to in kinder voices or treated with more patience than my darker skinned peers or sisters by both people of colour and by White people, all things being equal.  In time, I have learnt that my femininity and womanhood would be more easily accepted.

Parenting and internalised racism

…in our efforts to compensate for racism, we socialise children into injustice, compliance and complicity and instil a sense of inferiority in them. In doing so we may limit children’s scope to be themselves. We may reduce our capacity to respond to them with compassion and kindness. We may attend to stereotypes of what our children could be or could be seen as, rather than attending to them as unique persons. In a nutshell, we may contribute to racism’s self-fulfilling prophecies, perpetuate racial inequalities and more worryingly, may increase their risk of psychological  distress.
The perpetuation of oppression is everyone’s business

  • Internalising racism is adaptive. It is no pathology.
  • The construction of reality is controlled by the dominant group and circulated throughout society
  • those who are oppressed come to internalise the dominant group’s interests as their own
  • the interests of the oppressors are presented as actually reflecting everyone’s best interests…
  • the construction of a superior class is dependent upon the existence of an inferior one.
  • double bind: Be like us to be human. Trying to be like us is evidence that you are not human.

Many pearls of wisdom in this article!

Note: Parents of all colors can have internalized racism and bias.
