Ferguson Police Chief Issues Apology to Michael Brown’s Family

ST. LOUIS — As the parents of Michael Brown appeared Thursday in the nation’s capital to call on the Justice Department to take over the case of their 18-year-old son whom police shot in August, the chief in the St. Louis suburb where he was killed apologized to the Brown family.

Police Chief Thomas Jackson
in Ferguson, Mo., issued a video apology Thursday to Brown’s parents and peaceful protesters, according to a St. Louis public-relations firm’s video.

“I’m truly sorry for the loss of your son. I’m also sorry that it took so long to remove Michael from the street,” said Jackson, dressed casually in a red polo shirt. “You have every right to be angry and upset. The time that it took involved the completion of the work of the investigators to preserve physical evidence and determine the facts, but 4½ hours was simply too long.”

Know Your Rights When Confronted by the Police

TR: In August, Ferguson, Mo., police Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown in a confrontation that began when the officer reportedly asked him and a friend to walk on the sidewalk instead of in the street. The incident ended in the shooting that ignited a firestorm of controversy, including weeks of fiery protests over excessive force and police brutality. Given this scenario, can citizens refuse to heed an officer’s command when they haven’t committed a crime and, well, walk away alive?

RS: My advice is to heed the officer’s command, even if someone has not committed a crime. It’s just not worth the risk. It is always best to remain polite and calm, and certainly never to physically resist a police officer.

Always ask the police officer if you can go. If the officer says yes, you have the right to remain silent or leave. If the officer says no, it means you are being detained for questioning. In this instance, you should say, “I am going to remain silent,” and request a lawyer.

Just because you have rights in your interactions with the police and choose to exercise them does not mean that the agents or police will follow the law and respect those rights. That’s why it’s advisable to remain calm, polite and cooperative, even when you know they are wrong. Challenging police misconduct should not be done on the street. It is better to do it in court afterwards. If you believe the police have violated your rights, call your local ACLU affiliate as soon as you can.

The U.S. says we have the right to bear arms.

But if you’re Black or Brown… guess what? You will get shot if you carry a toy gun, or a black wallet, or cell phone or even if you have both hands in the air.

Denver Deputies Killed Homeless Street Preacher [VIDEO]

DENVER (AP) — Five Denver sheriff’s deputies followed the rules when they used a sleeper hold and stun gun to restrain a homeless street preacher who died in the downtown jail, a defense attorney said Monday.

The comments by Denver attorney Thomas Rice came during opening statements in a federal civil trial involving the deputies accused of using excessive force in connection with the death of Marvin Booker.

Surveillance footage played in court shows three officers wrestling Booker onto chairs then down to the floor before two others join the scuffle. One puts his arm around Booker’s neck for about three minutes. Officials said at the time that a deputy warned Booker to stop resisting.

An autopsy report said deputies had their body weight on Booker’s back for four minutes while he was face-down on the floor.

The video also shows deputies carrying Booker’s limp body to an isolation cell after one of them stunned him for at least eight seconds.

Newman said deputies showed no concern for Booker’s health after the incident and should have summoned medical care sooner.
