Football Fan Threatens to “Fucking Cut” Native American

[A] blonde little wisp of a girl completely freaked me out as I waited in line for the bathroom. “Is that shirt supposed to be funny?” she asked motioning to my satirical“Caucasians” T-shirt. And then she said, “I’ll fucking cut you.” Actually, she didn’t scare me so much as the wannabe linebackers standing behind her who looked like they wanted to make good on her threat.

Epidemic: Guns kill twice as many kids as cancer does

ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Most victims of gun violence in 2010 were not on a battlefield or remote hillside in the Middle East fighting in a war. They were, like 6-year-old Brandon Holt, children and teenagers in America, according to the Children’s Defense Fund.

Brandon was shot in the head by his friend and neighbor, an unidentified 4-year-old boy, on Monday night. He is now also a statistic of gun violence.

Migrant Child Labor in the United States [VIDEO]

Posted on July 21, 2010 by WITNESS

This post was written by Chanchala Gunewardena
, (Clark University 2011), Summer 2010 intern in WITNESS’ Communications department.

Last Thursday, WITNESS was invited to The Paley Center for Media for a screening of a special segment of NBC’s Dateline, titled America Now: Children of the Harvest. This piece, a follow up to a 1998 Emmy Award winning report on migrant farm workers and their families, attempts to see, what has developed and changed in the lives of a particular group of people twelve years on. More specifically however, it is focused on the issue of child labor, as migrant families who work in the agricultural sector tend to be assisted in their work by their whole family, including children under the legal working age (for this specific sector) of twelve.

Fox’s “Cashin’ In” Cashes In on Japanese Internment

“Yeah, you read that headline right. Over the weekend, Eric Bolling, the host of Fox News’ Cashin’ In went to Michelle Malkin-land and justified criminal profiling of Muslims based upon the notion that sending pretty near every Japanese American on the U.S. mainland (120,000+ people) and not a few in Hawai’i to prison camps in WWII contributed to the success of the U.S. war effort. According to Bolling, “we know how to find terrorists among us: profile, profile, profile.”

Doubling down on that sentiment, panelist Jonathan Hoenig said:

…Let’s take a trip down memory lane here: the last war this country won, we put Japanese-Americans in internment camps, we dropped nuclear bombs on residential city centers. So yes, profiling would at least be a good start…

I know this view of Japanese American internment (not to mention killing at least 80,000 civilians with atomic bombs that also poisoned tens of thousands more for years afterward) is meant to drum up controversy; to lift ratings. But for the sake of those of you who, like me, have friends and family members who take the info-tainment on Fox seriously, here are a few facts to consider.

Teaching ‘The New Jim Crow’

Teaching Tolerance has teamed up with Michelle Alexander—author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness—to offer educators two FREE webinars exploring mass incarceration in the United States and how to teach about it. Don’t miss out on these unique opportunities to hear Alexander speak about how mass incarceration represents a form of racialized social control, one that traps millions of people of color in a permanent undercaste and parallels an earlier system of racial control—Jim Crow.
