Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans

“For weeks I have been in awe of the organizers and writers – Rev. Osagyefo SekouJamala RogersMalkia CyrilTa-Nehesi Coatesjohn a. powellFalguni A. Sheth, and so many others – who have placed the situation in Ferguson into critical historical and political context. This despite persistent attempts by police, elected officials, and mainstream media to erase that context with vilifications of black political protest and black life. I write this post to express my solidarity and rage, and to offer a response to the disturbing question that I’ve heard asked, and that demands an answer: Does Ferguson matter to Asian Americans?”

Israel destroys high-rise building in Gaza [VIDEO]

In what many Palestinians are calling “Gaza’s 9/11,” Israeli warplanes today destroyed the 12-story “Zafir 4” residential tower in Gaza City’s Tal al-Hawa neighborhood.

This video captures the moment. It appears that the building was struck by two missiles.

The tower was part of the Zafir complex and contained 44 apartments housing about 240 people. Residents had reportedly received warnings to leave the building, but medical officials said 17 people were injured, four of them children.

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights states that the building was attacked by Israel “without giving any specific explanation that can be verified.”

It adds: “Al Mezan’s investigations indicate that no military activities took place in or around it. Hundreds of its residents; most of whom are families headed by employees of the Palestinian Authority, were displaced.”

At least ten Palestinians were killed in relentless Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, mostly women and children, Ma’an News Agency reported.

Human rights groups have condemned Israel’s deliberate targeting of civilian homes and infrastructure, but amid international complicity and silence, it has continued the practice unabated.

At least 2,103 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since 7 July, Ma’an said.

Darren Wilson’s supporters

Darren Wilson has raised nearly $400,000 so far on GoFundMe.com. Compare that to Michael Brown’s family’s $250,000 – or George Zimmerman’s $200,000. Wilson is the White American police officer who gunned down Michael Brown, a Black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.

Cops Filmed Beating Man During Arrest At Walmart

Deputies in South Carolina are being probed after a suspect was beaten during an arrest caught on video Saturday.

Witnesses filmed two Greenville County Sheriff’s Office deputies as they appeared to punch a man more than 10 times during the arrest, which occurred at Walmart.

According to WSPA, deputies responded to a call about a man acting erratically at Walmart. They said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Although they struck the man twice with a stun gun, cops said the shock failed to incapacitate him

Republicans attempt to connect with Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese Americans – but leave out Black, Native American, Indian Americans, and more

Republicans are attempting to reach out to people of color on their YouTube channel called “House Republicans”.

Look at the sentiment that people have for the video about respect for Chinese verses the video about respect for Hispanics, highlighted at the bottom right of each screen shot. (Screen shots taken on 8/24/2014)

To be fair, we can’t be sure if people are voting for the production quality of each video, the words chosen for each video, the people in the video, or the people that the video is about.

However, I was shocked by how many thumbs down are on the video about Hispanic Heritage month.

Subject of iconic photo speaks of anger, excitement

This is Edward Crawford.

He’s 25, went to University City High School and works at a bistro on the Delmar Loop. He’s a waiter, a roller skater and a father of three.

And, just after midnight on Aug. 13, he grabbed a sparking, smoking tear gas cylinder, fired by police at Ferguson protesters, and threw it back.

The photo, taken by Post-Dispatch photographer Robert Cohen, has become an iconic image of the now two-week protest along West Florissant Avenue.

For many, the act bottles up all the anger directed at police after the shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown. It represents defiance against police aggression. And the shirt Crawford is wearing, with the American flag down the middle, identifies the irony of the moment.

But Crawford says he wasn’t angry when he threw it. He was angry beforehand. Afterward — as he was being dragged out of a car, cuffed and jailed — he was mostly just scared.

And throwing it wasn’t an act of rebellion, he said. It was instinct.
