Angelina Jolie Opens Sex Violence Summit With Aim to End War Rape

ABC News’ Hamish Macdonald reports:

LONDON – Actress Angelina Jolie opened a high-profile global summit in London today, aimed at ending sexual violence in conflict and emphasizing the message that victims have nothing to be ashamed of.

Rape in war zones is widespread and affects hundreds of thousands of people, many in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

“It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict; there is nothing inevitable about it,” Jolie, special envoy to the U.N. Commissioner for Refugees, said in opening the London conference. “It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power.”

The Unbelievable Brutality Unleashed on Kids in For-Profit Prisons

Michael McIntosh couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had come to visit his son at the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility near Jackson, Miss., only to be turned away. His son wasn’t there.

“I said, ‘Well, where is he?’ They said, ‘We don’t know.’”

Thus began a search for his son Mike that lasted more than six weeks. Desperate for answers, he repeatedly called the prison and the Mississippi Department of Corrections. “I was running out of options. Nobody would give me an answer, from the warden all the way to the commissioner.”

Finally, a nurse at the prison gave him a clue: Check the area hospitals.

After more frantic phone calls, he found Mike in a hospital in Greenwood, hours away. He was shocked at what he saw. His son could barely move, let alone sit up. He couldn’t see or talk or use his right arm. “He’s got this baseball-size knot on the back of his head,” McIntosh said. “He’s got cuts all over him, bruises. He has stab wounds. The teeth in the front are broken. He’s scared out of his mind. He doesn’t have a clue where he’s at – or why.”

Race and Money: Blacks Seen as Darker During Tough Economic Times

See on Scoop.itCommunity Village Daily

Tough economic times aren’t just hard on the wallet, they’re hard on race relations, too, a new study suggests.

Community Village‘s insight:

One of the statements in the experiment: “When Blacks make economic gains, Whites lose out economically”

The experiment indicates to me that when times are tough people become more xenophobic and less logical.

People who are against immigration also have views about loosing out economically, not realizing the fact that a larger population leads to economic gains for all.
