Study: Eviction Rates for Black Women on Par With Incarcerations for Black Men

MacArthur Foundation “How Housing Matters” (pdf) study reveals that while black men face alarmingly high incarceration rates, black women are disproportionately evicted from their homes.

According to the study, in any given year, approximately 16,000 adults and children are evicted in Milwaukee from approximately 6,000 housing units—that equates to 16 households evicted every day.

The Overwhelming Empirical Evidence That Guns Endanger Children

Caroline Starks was 2 years old. Her 5-year-old brother was playing nearby with his birthday present: a .22-caliber Crickett rifle. His mother stepped outside for a moment, certain the gun wasn’t loaded. She was wrong. Caroline was pronounced dead a few hours later at the Cumberland County Hospital in Kentucky….

This Law Was Based on a Racist Stereotype. Now It Punishes Thousands of Families for Being Poor.

Last April, Melissa Ortiz, a low-income mother of four, gave testimony to a committee of the California Assembly detailing her life on the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids program, or CalWORKs, the state’s welfare program. “When we first had the twins, the only person in my family getting…

Tenure Is Not the Problem in Our Public Schools. Segregation Is.

On Tuesday, a California court struck down state teacher tenure and seniority protections as a violation of the rights of poor and minority students to an equal education. The decision, which will make it easier to fire bad teachers, who are disproportionately found in high-poverty schools, is being hailed as…

If students are segregated in school their whole life, what would give them the idea that they could easily integrate into a mixed college campus and a mixed workforce too?

How Income Inequality Might Lead Students to Drop Out of High School

In states like Louisiana with large gaps between the the poorest households and middle earners, students are less likely to graduate high school.

While a little bit of inequality might motivate some students to study harder, a lot of it might kill their motivation entirely.

Also, has the child been encouraged? Has the child been told the importance of an education in today’s U.S. economy?

Do the teacher’s tell the children that they have potential?

And is there a class that explains in detail the importance of college? If the children know how important college is, then they would be more likely to finish high school

President Obama: “urgent humanitarian situation” #MigrantChildren

Two female detainees sleep in a holding cell, as the children are separated by age group and gender, as hundreds of mostly Central American immigrant children are being processed and held at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Nogales Placement Center on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in Nogales, Ariz.

CPB provided media tours Wednesday of two locations in Brownsville, Texas, and Nogales, that have been central to processing the more than 47,000 unaccompanied children who have entered the country illegally since Oct. 1.

They are sent to shelters for several weeks as the government tries to reunite them with family in the U.S. The network of some 100 shelters around the country has been over capacity for months and is now caring for more than 7,600 children.

It seems Central America is in a major crisis right now.

I listen to the news every day and haven’t heard what has lead to this sudden urgency in migration. I mostly hear about the chaos in Iraq on the news.

Does anyone know what is happening in Central America that would cause parents to send their kids alone. Have thousands of parents been kidnapped or murdered?

One would think that the U.S. would have an interest in stabilizing Central America. Maybe I haven’t heard about stabilization efforts because I’m not tuned into the right media channels?
