Michael Dunn Sentenced to Life Without Parole

The man who was found guilty on three counts of attempted 2nd degree murder, firing a missile, and 1st degree murder, for killing 17-year old, unarmed Jordan Davis, has been sentenced.

Michael Dunn will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole,  plus 105 years.

Dunn gave a half-ass apology, stating;

“I want the Davis family to know I truly regret what happened. I’m sorry for their loss,” If I could roll back time and do things differently, I would.  I was in fear for my life and I did what I thought I had to do. Still, I am mortified I took a life, whether it was justified or not.”

Why Are People Angry That Race Was Not Mentioned During Deliberations in Dunn’s Trial?

“Recently, two of the jurors in the case of Michael Dunn have interviewed with CNN. Both were asked if race was mentioned during deliberations.  Both answered “no.”  Then, panels discussing the interviews voiced their disagreement with the jury not discussing race during deliberations.  Some online sources have also criticized those jurors. Even Jordan Davis’ father said he could not see how it didn’t come up since Dunn’s girlfriend gave credible testimony that he used the words “thug music.””

Community Village‘s insight:

I do think bias played a part in Michael Dunn’s actions. I suppose race was not mentioned by the prosecution because a hate crime would require more specific hate speech.

This is the hate speech I heard him use:

  • “rap crap”
  • “son of a bitch”
  • “animals” – when referring to others in the prison.

I suppose the prosecution didn’t want to go down the hate crime road with only those three phrases.

The Logic of the Michael Dunn Jury

The most amazing feature of our era is the belief that 300 years of racist policy gives no tell on our daily lives. The second is the belief that juries are somehow beyond reproach.

This is about whether we will live in candor or live in flattery. This is about whether we will continue the dishonorable tradition of leaving uncomfortable business to be inherited by our children…

A very wise man wrote me the other day and said he would have been happier if Dunn had been convicted of first-degree murder, gotten 15 years, and then was released to try to pick up the pieces of his life. And I think that really gets to the point. This is not about the ruination of white people—individual or collective. This is about coping with a heritage of regarding black people as subhuman.”

Michael Dunn Headed to Prison for the Shots that Failed to Kill

“… Although Dunn did face some consequences for his behavior and the case was so egregious, the jury still struggled with the notion that Dunn was guilty. Apparently by merely raising the suggestion that Jordan Davis could have had a gun, even though no gun was found, Dunn’s attorneys were able to plant the seed of doubt in the jury. A white guy who shoots black teenagers should be given the benefit of the doubt, the jury apparently reasoned. Even if the shooter fails to contact the police after murdering a black youth and instead orders pizza…”

Michael Dunn Guilty of 3 Counts of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder

“Twelve jurors have found Michael Dunn guilty of 2nd degree attempted murder upon the lives of Tevin Thompson, Leland Brunson, and Tommie Stornes.  Each count carries a minimum sentence of 20 years to a maximum of 30 years.  Sentencing can run concurrently or consecutively.  Some familiar with Judge Healey are of the opinion that he is unlikely to enter concurrent sentences.  That means that Dunn is looking at a minimum of 60 years in prison on the 2nd degree attempted murder convictions.

The jury also found Dunn guilty of shooting a firearm into the vehicle, the sentence of which is a minimum of 15 years.”
