Events planned for first anniversary of Andy Lopez killing – Oct 22, 2013 – Santa Rosa, CA

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. — Sonoma County residents are preparing several events to mark the one-year anniversary of the killing of 13-year-old Andy Lopez by a county sheriff’s deputy on Oct. 22, 2013.

Community members plan to attend a 6 p.m. meeting Monday in Santa Rosa of the Community and Local Law Enforcement Task Force, which was established by the county Board of Supervisors following the shooting of Andy by Deputy Erick Gelhaus, who believed the airsoft rifle the teen was carrying was an AK-47 rifle.

Woman Brutally Beaten by CHP Officer Speaks Out

 

In July, 51-year-old kinkily Marlene Pinnock was walking on the side of a California highway when aCalifornia Highway Patrol officer threw her to the ground and began brutally beating her in the face. That officer, http://blumberger.net/news/page/5/ Daniel Andrew, has not been subject to any disciplinary action but he has been placed on “non road patrol duty”, and CHP says its investigation is ongoing.

San Diego Border Community Rallies to Support Jose Gutierrez

“Shena Gutierrez, the wife of Jose, released this statement on behalf of their family:

 

“Three years ago, our lives completely changed when Jose was handcuffed and taken from us to be deported to Mexico, a country he had not seen in over 3 decades. We did not think things could get any worse until March 30, 2011, when Jose was brutally beaten into a coma by Border Patrol agents. For 3 years we have been fighting for justice. The release of four names out of the eleven agents involved in the beating of my husband is not good enough! We want ALL names released! We want justice, accountability and transparency!”

 

Since the incident occurred three years ago, Shena Gutierrez has become an outspoken advocate in defense of her husband and other border families who have been affected by border brutality and abuse of power. On a few occasions, she has traveled to Washington D.C. to speak to members of Congress who have been made aware of the lack of accountability and oversight within the nation’s largest law enforcement agency.

 

Last June, she joined with the families of Anastasio Hernandez Rojas and Valeria Munique Tachiquin in a video asking their Senator to equip Border Patrol with body worn-cameras, which CBP has committed to, but has not yet implemented.  Last week, the request was once again raised, this time to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

The Bay Area’s Faculty Student Mismatch

 

“Below is a glimpse of data on the representation and diversity (or lack thereof) of university professors relative to student demographics in San Francisco Bay Area campuses. The article, White professors still dominate Bay Area colleges as student bodies grow more diverse, gives a bit more context to the issue. Unfortunately, this phenomena is not unique to the Bay Area. A very important issue as the representation of students of color generally, and Chicano/Latinos in particular, continue to rise.”

Notice how the hiring of faculty is way out of proportion to the demographics of the student population. What do you think accounts for that?

Structural, institutionalized and personal favoritism?

Another way to look at this chart – if you combine the Asian and White groups together in the pie charts those groupings are then a fairly close match between the two columns of Faculty & Students.

 

Steven Riley, and others have mentioned that Asians are the next group that may likely ‘become white’ – in the way that Italians, Irish, Jewish, Middle Easterners and Egyptians have become culturally ‘white’ in the U.S. and on the census.

If you group Black and Latino groups together in the pie chart, the numbers also somewhat match between the faculty and students columns.

It’s also interesting to note that UC Berkeley is the only university to successfully hire a matching percentage of Black faculty compared to their student population.
