Laura, her husband Austin, and their teenage son L.D. had been taken into custody after George Loney and three others arrived at their home on May 2, 1911 to investigate the theft of a cow. The son shot Loney, who then bled to death, while Laura was reportedly the first one to grab the gun and both were charged with murder.
